    Default Miles per gallon

I am concerned with the mpg I am getting from a new Altea. It has the 1.9d engine. It has just reached 2,000 miles and according to the trip computer on a long run of motorway and dual carriage way I am averaging 40-42 (speeds no more than 10mph above National speed limit), last night in wet/windy conditions I only averaged 39mph. On a mixed run I get about 42-44mpg. Is this normal? Previously I had the 2.0 diesel in an audi A4 estate I was getting 45-52 mpg no matter how hard the car was driven and even in a nissan x-trail 2.2 d was managing 38mpg. Speaking to friends who have had Tourans and Bora's with the 1.9 engine they have managed 44-50mpg. Please tell me the engine will loosen and return more miles per gallon?
