Default Cordoba stalls as I slow down

1998 Seat Cordoba - going well. Recently started to stall at stop signs unless I kick out of gear long before stop. Idle can also be erratic at times. Normally about 800.
Other problem (possibly related) is that after a long descent down a hill (foot off accelerator) and then pressing accelerator I get a lot of smoke.

    Any ideas?

    Default stalling cordoba

    Hi.
You dont say what engine you have got ?
    Petrol or Derv.

    (smoke)
if TDi could be oil seel on turbo unit.
if petrol it sounds like inlet valve seals.

    (stalling)
split or brken inlet air pipe, split gasket after air flow meter.

1.4 petrol engine (no TDI). I have the feeling that it may be related to vacuum or getting too much raw fuel at idle. The stalling problem gets worse when the wipers, heater and lights are on.

Spray some carb cleaner or WD40 round the intlet manafold on tick over if the revs rise you need to change the inlet manafold gasket. that will cause the issue you have discribed

I finally resolved the problem by replacing the idle sensor and it seems to have cured both problems. Thanks for the suggestions - I will also try the WD40.
