VW Golf GTI 3: engine rattles when cold

I have a golf 3 GTI from `96 and since a few days I hear behind the handbrake and the rear for a rumble as the engine is cold. Especially when I go up or by a pit / threshold row. If the engine is warm I hear not hardly. Does anyone have an idea what it could be? Monday 15 February a friend will look at the problem

Hi, firstly check the exhaust for rattle, it may be something as simple as a rubber loose or missing.
