    Default Favorit - bad starting

    1994 Fav LXie Plus.136B engine
For a long time the car has taken about 6~8 turns (comp strokes) to start but then ran very well.(Very good on emmission test) Now it doesn't want to start at all. After some lengthy attempts-at starting- I removed the plugs - they were all dry. So I suspect fuel starvation. Unfortunately I don't have access to a lift to get at the fuel filter. Also I can't figure out what the charcoal canister does or what I should do with it.
As a 'get you home' proceedure would it work if I squirted some fuel direct into the intake while cranking?
    Thanks for ideas.

    Hi mate,
funnily enough I had exactly the same problem.
I was stranded at Morrisons : fuel starvation.
4hrs later it started and is now running perfectly.
I'm wondering whether it was condensation in the petrol tank.

"As a 'get you home' proceedure would it work if I squirted some fuel direct into the intake while cranking?"

Do you mean to get it started ?.......you could try.
I don't think you could run it using that method.
    Good luck.

    Hi Paulfn
<it wouldn't start at Morrison's.Then when I went to tow it 7hrs later(with the Audi) it started. It's running fine now.
It was definitely fuel starvation.Could it be condensation in the fuel tank ?

Funnily enough I was going to phone a scrapper to collect it today,
it was my brother who insisted on towing it.....and now I wouldn't be surprised
if I don't keep it another couple of years >

And I was thinking along those lines - scrapper - but at least mine is at home.
Yes the idea of fuel direct to the intake was just to get it started. It used to work before on oldies without the gizzmos.
How far did you have to tow before it fired up, did it just pick up on one cylinder at a time.
Have you had a look at the filter near the tank.
Did you pull off any of the fuel feed connxns to the cannister - did you get any fuel pressure (if you did)
It makes you a bit wary after that sort of experience ~ intermittent fault.
    Regards
    Tony

I was just about to attach the tow rope when my brother
said,"Try it one more time"....and it was off....on all cylinders....ticking
    over on idle and everything.
I don't know what it was,it's never happened before.

Mick,I don't know what your problem is but mine was definitely fuel.
When I flattened the accelerator it briefly revved then died.
When your Octavia dies try dipping the clutch and then pumping the
accelerator......mind you there are that many sensors that come into play
it could've been electrical with mine.
Gab, if your plugs are dry it could be the filter or fuel pump.If it's a mechanical
    pump they're only £9.99 on ebay.Mine is electrical £~100 that's why I was
    looking up the scrapper's number

I haven't looked at the fuel filter......it really is back to its old self (touch wood)
My neighbour bought a new Alfa Romeo and had breakdowns all over.
I'll stick with the Favorit until something terminal happens

    Hi Mick
I vaguely recall having a similar problem with a '79 Carlton. It turned out to be the fuel tank vent was blocked - couldn't get air in to replace fuel out, causing a vacuum.
