Default Skoda Octavia: unstable rpm on start

    Hi

i try to describe the problem of my car, 1999 octavia 1.9 tdi AHF engine, maybe somebody can help me, my mechanic can't.
when i start the car in some points between 1k to 2k rpm i heard some noise from engine associated with a lot of black smoke. when this happens the rpm don't increase. after a few moments rpm is back to normal and the noise and the smoke disappear. In about two minutes after start the car run just fine. Rarely the problem appear during trip and just in low rpms.

    regards

    Hi

I had an issue with mine and turned out to be something I least expected, the temperature sender. Like yours mine quickly settled as soon as the car started to warm up. Apparently the sender is linked to the computer system so it can calculate how much fuel to deliver to compensate for ambient temperature conditions. After much scratching of heads a simply replacing with a new one cured the problem. The other thing that can cause this is part of the induction system. I am not sure what it is called but with age, oil can leak past a diaphram and accumulate in the the manifold. This in turn gets burned on start up and can cause excess smoke. Hope this is of some help
