I'm no mechanic and can't help in that sense - but is your car a 2.0ltr TDi? If it is, I wonder if it has the same clutch system as the Octavia. I've now got the new Superb but until a few months ago had an Octavia 2.0TDi which had a warranty recall on it a few years ago for the dual mass fly wheel I think it was called because there was a fault with it. 17,000miles doesn't seem very good. My advice is to contact Skoda UK customer services. Ive had a few dealings with them and they've been great. 01454 410410. It may be that your clutch is from the same batch but was missed for some reason.
    Hope this helps.

Tell them no- it should be covered under warrintee at that milage.
google your "Statutory Rights". they are obliged under law (the dealership you bought the car from) to supply goods and services which are

    As described
    Of Merchandiseable Quality
Fit for the purpose for which sold.

A clutch which fails after 17k miles should be well within the warrintee. and fails both points 2 and 3 above.

there is no limit to how long a clutch can last. a bad driver can burn a clutch out in less than a week.if you are holding it on a hill at the traffic lights.to say it is the fly wheel that has caused it is silly without stripping it down first.first you have to know how a clutch works and know how to fit them.i can buy a full clutch for £80 and fit it in half a day.a clutch can last the lifetime of the car if driven properly.that means not holding it on hills, not keeping your foot down on it until the lights change which puts pressure on the release bearings.doing fast set offs.
