    Default Alternator Fabia 1.4 16V 100bhp

I need to replace the alternator in my mum's Fabia.
The power steering keeps failing, due to low battery seemingly and the engine lights on, fault codes indicate low voltage I've been informed due to the alternator failing.

As a typical Scotsman I want ot repair as cheap as I can so I'm looking at second hand alternators, will one fit from a VW 1.4 16V? or another 1.4 8v Fabia?

Our Fabia doesn't have aircon, can I fit an alternator from a car thed does have aircon?

    Cheers
    Robin

Yes to all those I beleive. but you should ensure you replace with right item.

Best bet is to remove the alternator and take it with you that way you can check its the same for wires and fitments/pully size.

Before you posibly waste your time and money. I would bypass the computer system by connecting a wire from a 25amp fuse in the fuse box to the alternator. The reason I say this is because I spent a week and £170 buying a replacement alternator a day fitting it then £35 getting a fault code done as the new one still wasnt charging. It was not charging because the computer had not told it to. cost to fix £800 on top of the £205 I had just spent. Needless to say I have a perminant bypass in place to ensure charging.

Secondly I would also advise that you test battery first as could be that.
On wensday I should be able to advise on the exact wire to bypass. To attach to fuse I simple stripped end of wire (speaker cable) unplugged fuse, push wire into fused side then placed fuse in to hold in place.

    Default Battery Light

Thanks for that, I have also just noticed that the battery light doesn't come on when you switch the ignition on. Could this be part or the cause of the problem? The garage who MOTed it said there was an out put from the alternator at times so I think the alternator its self is fine.

    Default Solved the problem

I've solved it, feeling rather impressed with myself at the moment.

    I found another forum saying:

I have one guess if the wiring harness in the engine bay on the diesel powered Fabia looks like the ones equipped with the 1,4 MPI engine (the most common engine in early Fabias in Norway) , and that would be a "fractured" D+ lead near the gearbox. On the 1,4 MPI engine there is a 2 pin connector in front of the gearbox, and the D+ (blue) lead is one of the wires in this connector housing which frequently breaks because of engine movement.

You can check this by unclipping the D+ connector on the generator (usually two relatively thin wires in one connector. The thick one is callled B+) , use a voltmeter set to 20V DC with the + lead attached to the blue wire in this connector and the minus lead of the test instrument connected to something with terminal 31 (minus) e.g. engine block. After a safe connection has been made, turn on ignition, and you should read battery voltage on your test instrument. If not, you could be pretty sure that the D+ lead has a fracture at some point.

Hope this helps with sorting the charging issue on your Fabia

And hey presto, the connection infront of the grear box just behind the front bumber had the blue wire broken, a bit of sticky back plastic and heres one I mad earlier. Will try and take pics to help others.

well done if you had said light was not coming on I would have advised checking bulb as this would stop battery chargeing lol. Ill have a look at ours but pretty shaw its not that. cheers
